DR. UGO CHIME: THE SMALL-BOY CONDUCTOR WITH FOOTPRINTS ACROSS ENUGU STATE AND BEYOND

Over the past five years, I have had the opportunity to listen to Dr. Ugo Chime and to share in some of his dreams and aspirations. I have been fascinated by his business acumen, entrepreneurial ideas, the enormous scale of his vision, and his passion for skills development and youth empowerment. I will never forget the day he shared with me his views about those who spend hours at Okpara Square in the guise of physical fitness. It took me an entire day to process his insights and come to terms with them.

Congratulations on the successful launch of the affordable home ownership programme, “Home for Every Dream and a House for Every Pocket”—another signature project of the Copen Group.

Great entrepreneurs do not merely build businesses or capture market share. They build enterprises and institutionalize enterprise development to ensure continuity and the transfer of wealth across generations. They understand that systems shape outcomes, create value, and establish legacies that endure long after the founders are gone.

Today, we celebrate Dr. Ugo Chime and the people who bring the Copen Group vision to life. We celebrate a real estate mogul of uncommon vision and an entrepreneur of extraordinary accomplishment whose life and career embody the spirit of audacious achievement. His journey demonstrates that we are all called to purpose in life. In him, we find living proof that there is elegance in simplicity and that it is possible to prosper by creating value for others. Through the numerous signature projects and enduring landmarks he has continued to develop, we are reminded that one can pursue wellness, wellbeing, and wealth while remaining steadfast in faith and committed to glorifying God in spirit and in truth.

I remember the story he shared with me about the conception and development of the Premier Layout by New Artisan, Enugu. At the time, the area was largely an expanse of jungle and undeveloped land. Today, it hosts Goshen Estate, Jubilee Estate, Shalom Estate by Copen Group, and numerous other estates and private housing developments. The transformation is remarkable.

Where others saw vacant land, a festering jungle, and a haven for criminal elements, he saw thriving communities and premium real estate opportunities. Where others saw insurmountable challenges and limitations, he saw endless possibilities. With a remarkable ability to anticipate emerging opportunities and an unwavering commitment to excellence, he has helped redefine residential and commercial development in Enugu State and beyond. Through strategic vision, disciplined execution, and relentless determination, Dr. Chime has transformed wastelands—some burdened by community disputes, competing interests, and individual greed, into mutually beneficial developments that advance the common good.

Day by day, his footprints continue to spread across Enugu State and beyond. From the bustling centres of commerce to the expanding frontiers of emerging communities, his signature of integrity, quality, innovation and affordability is increasingly evident. By every standard, he has not just constructed commercial and residential buildings; he has created homes, nurtured communities, stimulated economic activity, and contributed meaningfully to the transformation of the physical and economic landscape of the state. I believe that these accomplishments will positively impact this latest real estate venture. 

Over the years, Dr. Chime has built substantial goodwill and a growing network of beneficiaries through his affordable housing initiatives, human capital development programmes, and exemplary Christian work ethic. Those relationships and the trust they represent are invaluable assets in themselves.

As I earlier alluded, his entrepreneurial influence extends far beyond the real estate sector. As a consummate business leader, Dr. Chime has contributed to economic growth, created employment opportunities, inspired aspiring entrepreneurs, and demonstrated the power of vision guided by disciplined action. His resilience through changing economic cycles and political transitions offers valuable lessons in leadership, adaptability, and sustainable enterprise development. I sometimes wish I possessed a measure of his patience, vision, tact, adaptability, tolerance in the face of assaults on the public psyche, and unwavering courage of conviction.

It is remarkably rare to find the qualities of a military general and the patience of a farmer embodied in the same individual. Yet I find both in him. It is a rare gift.

Today, we salute Dr. Ugo Chime, not only for the enterprises he has built and the successful launch of his new-generation affordable housing programme, but also for the lives he has touched through his numerous initiatives: the Amadeo Business Summit, his philanthropic work through the Barnabas Hope Foundation, his skills acquisition and vocational training programs, and his selfless dedication to the causes of the Agbaja Leaders of Thought, particularly the proposed Centre of Excellence at 9th Mile Corner.

Without a doubt, his journey remains an inspiration to all who believe that vision, hard work, faith, and service can transform ordinary beginnings into an extraordinary legacy.

May God continue to guide, guard, and bless him, his amiable wife, and their beloved family.
